Why Acrylic?

Deciding to remodel your bath is a big step, but what material should you use?

Bathtub Renovation Options

Is your tub dented, scratched, an undesirable color or style? Do you wish it was a little deeper, a little shallower or easier to clean? You can change the color and renew the surface with a technique called 'reglazing', which has some drawbacks:

  • Tub preparation uses caustic chemicals and requires whole house ventilation
  • The reglazed surface is delicate, prone to peeling and warranted for only a few years
  • Reglazing doesn’t address dents, tub style or old walls and fixtures

Acrylic liners or replacement tubs from Bathwraps offer major advantages:

  • Acrylic tubliners hide imperfections and damage while offering size and style options to fit your unique needs.
  • Replacements offer even more flexibility for customizing size, shape and style. Consider replacing your seldom-used bathtub with a walk-in shower!
  • Bathwraps are easy to clean, never fade, crack or peel, are impervious to mold and mildew, and provide a lifetime of use with little maintenance.
  • Acrylic liners and replacements are installed in one day, so you can enjoy your new bath without waiting through a long, stressful project.

Wall Renovation Options

Now that you’ve addressed your old tub or shower, what do you do with the walls? Your options include tile and grout, fiberglass or any number of one-piece drop-in systems. How does acrylic measure up?

  • Any tile (ceramic, marble, glass) requires grout to fill in the gaps between tiles. Grout requires consistent maintenance to extend its useful life, but all grout needs to be removed and replaced periodically. Regular sealing is also necessary to reduce the amount of moisture that permeates the grout, which can never be eliminated. If you are less than diligent about sealing or if your grout is already failing, then water is getting through to your wall material. Wet walls mean rot and mold, which can be expensive to remedy and potentially dangerous to the health of your family.
  • Fiberglass also has a limited life expectancy. The more it is exposed to cleaning chemicals, abrasive cleansers and basic soaps, the more the top coating breaks down and exposes the glass fibers. This breakdown makes the fiberglass material more porous and susceptible to mold, as well as weakening the material.
  • One-piece drop-in systems advertise that they’re simple and seamless, but the reality is that they’re rigid and limiting. The main drawback is that they fit a specific opening and create weak, hollow areas where they don’t fit. These areas create stress points which encourage cracking and hold moisture that feeds mold. Other downfalls to the one-piece systems include the inability to customize for special circumstances, resistance to thermal expansion which creates stress and cracking, and limited customization options.
